8 Ways to say Love
in the Philippines

8 Ways to Say Love in the Philippines' is a project dedicated to showing the diversity of Filipino culture, history, and language.

Concept

Through the universal emotion of 'love', this book attempts to show some of the different languages that exist in the Philippines as well as give snippets of information about each region mentioned. This is in an effort to bring awareness to the rich cultural variety and abundant history of my home country, and the deep-rooted feeling of love I carry for it.

Process

The making of this book begins with risograph printing all the pages of the book. To do this, I created each colour as a separate layer and doing a final print with both colours. The use of red and yellow were in reference to the Philippine flag in addition to red being a colour heavily associated with love.

Then came the assembly. All the pages were handcut and then organized into piles so that building the book could be done with a clear system. After organizing all the pages into five separate books, they were glued together and perfect binded to the cover.

A heart motif was used part of the design for its common connection to love. I restricted myself to using only hearts and circles to portray a feeling of softness.

The stand-alone illustrations are my visual interpretations of love centred around the concepts of communication, interaction, connection, and the physical feeling of love.

The content discuesses a variety of information such as the region the dialect is spoken in, the history and general facts about the region, and how you would say “I love you” in that dialect. I wanted to emphasize that each region has its own history and story to tell.
