Fresh Sheet

2022 | COMD-314

A text-based cookbook design, centred on elegance and approachability. This project focussed on enhancing typesetting and publication design skills. Using complimentary typefaces and typographical elements, this design aims to create a functional, yet visually-pleasing cookbook.

Concept

This project was given with a limitation: to only use typography and typographical elements to create the design such as colour, heirarchy, grids, glyphs, etc. With that in mind, this design focusses on emphasizing the display typeface and allowing it to create the feeling of a sophisticated design along while utilizing hierarchy and grids to create a clean, approachable reading system for the recipes.

Approach

The “flower” motif (an asterisk) was used to symbolize plants/greenery, enhanced by the use of green and brown. This was to evoke a sense of fresh, natural ingredients and create an elegant look. In tandem with the display type, these elements give a sophisticated and refined look to the design.

In the chapter introductions, the beautiful display type was used to create movement through the repetition and placement of specific words.

To contrast the busyness of the chapter introductions, the recipe spreads are kept simple with plenty of negative space, a consistent grid system, and a simple hierarchy, in an attempt to make the recipes less daunting to take on and easy for the eye to follow.
