Hello :)

	I’m Dominique! A vancouver-based communication designer and illustrator! I am experienced in typographic design, branding, and publication design. Additionally, I have a passion for print media and creating short-run zines, books, and prints! I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Design from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. My work often combines my technical skills and design sense with my knack for illustration. By blending together my love for design and illustration, I strive to create unique projects that embody my passion for community, culture, identity, and storytelling.

Eat Gulay
2022-2023 | COMD-400/410; Capstone Project

Eat Gulay is the product of 8 months of research and design. Showcasing the lived experiences of young Filipino/a/x folks in Canada, this book attempts to bring about discussion and highlight the voices of young people within the community. This project was given an honourable mention for the Glenmore Print + Packaging Award at the Emily Carr’s Graduation Exhibit, ‘The Show 2023’

	<img width="1680" height="1200" width_o="1680" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d3948693bf73f37f94f5d5508e438e4a06188b57a32516d6bdb9129fc9607a15/IMG_9153.jpg" data-mid="194969467" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d3948693bf73f37f94f5d5508e438e4a06188b57a32516d6bdb9129fc9607a15/IMG_9153.jpg" />

	How it Began
	This project was heavily inspired by my own experiences growing up as a Filipino-Canadian. Since I was young, l found it difficult to learn about and understand my cultural identity. I often felt alone in my struggles grappling my identity as a Filipino and a Canadian, especially when I felt like I didn’t belong to either label. Trying to assimilate while attempting to embrace my heritage was never an easy feat and I often felt like I lacked a sense of belonging.
As I grew older, I gained a strong desire to learn more about Filipino culture and finally come to terms with the never-ending confusion that was my Filipino-Canadian identity. This desire to better understand myself and my culture&nbsp; led to many Filipino-focussed projects throughout my schooling. Because of this, I knew that for my fourth year capstone project, I wanted to create something that younger me would have wanted- something that allowed Filipino-Canadians to share their experience in hopes of bringing together community.

	Opportunity Space
	I probed the concept of what it means to be a Filipino individual within Canada and how aspects of the culture have affected people’s journey in forming and understanding their cultural identity.
<img width="3001" height="2351" width_o="3001" height_o="2351" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/285a24a07e8a4d6649a7c7505e9316348cf9e44113805588c139ea09a31e9cec/interview-pic.png" data-mid="200005202" border="0" data-scale="66" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/285a24a07e8a4d6649a7c7505e9316348cf9e44113805588c139ea09a31e9cec/interview-pic.png" />

	Conversations
	I was fortunate enough to speak to Filipino Canadians across Canada and learn about their experiences residing here. They provided me with many insights through their lived experiences and informed the bulk of this project from start to finish. From university students to working professionals, first and second-generation immigrants, friends, and strangers, these conversations allowed me to learn more about the Filipino/a/x Canadian community and what being Filipino means to these individuals.

	Reflecting on Representation
	As one of my first attempts working with the community, two of my close friends and interviewees collaborated with me to create “filipino representation is not inclusive”. This is a zine that expresses our opinions on Filipino representation by providing examples and explanations as a way to organize our strong opinions on this topic. This was inspired by some of my first interviews, as a common topic was representation and what it means for our community. We gave our thoughts to questions such as ‘What is positive representation?’, ‘ What is negative representation?’, ‘ What sort of representation do we have?’, and ‘ How do we go beyond stereotypes?’. This was a way for my friends and I to air out our grievances and have a discussion on something that frustrated us.&nbsp;The illustrations in this zine were provided by Jae while content and editing was done by myself and Julianne.

	Reflecting on Culture &amp; Identity
	To further work with the community, I created two activities that focus on allowing individuals within the community to reflect on their relationship/journey with their cultural identity. The first activity I called ‘Imagining Identity’, which was a drawing activity in which participants answered five prompts with any sort of illustration. The drawings could be anything- an object, colour, memory, etc.&nbsp;
The prompts given to participants were: What does belonging look like to you? What is your earliest memory of living in Canada? How do you define home? What is your favourite thing about Filipino culture? What is your least favourite thing about Filipino culture?

<img width="6001" height="4260" width_o="6001" height_o="4260" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1d916378c7bf82fc13dc0b5df98803635e675612277a68033828982fd27b3f3c/drawings-compiled.png" data-mid="201831651" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1d916378c7bf82fc13dc0b5df98803635e675612277a68033828982fd27b3f3c/drawings-compiled.png" />
The second activity was called ‘A Letter to...’. In this activity participants were asked to write a letter as a way to further reflect on their relationship with Filipino culture and their cultural identity. The letter could be written to themselves, another person, or a group of people. The content of the letter could be about anything- what the individual feels, their memories, their experiences being in Canada, and so on. Their was also no restriction on language, allowing participants to write in English, Tagalog, or another Filipino dialect.

	Final Outcomes

	The Title
	The name of this project came from an expression my friend’s mother would tell them,&nbsp; “eat gulay for long buhay”&nbsp; which translates to “eat vegetables for long life”. I found this expression both amusing and endearing, encapsulating values such as family, care, and kindness, all of which are present in Filipino culture and people.

	Prints
	I created a set of five prints to give to my participants as well as the general public. The prints are illustrations of things in Filipino culture such as food, national symbols, meaningful phrases,&nbsp; and traditional clothing, with one of the prints relating to the project.

	The Publication
	The final publication was the culmination of my 8 months of research and design. From the beginning, I knew I wanted the end result to be something physical I could share with others and keep for myself.
This project allowed me to converse with individuals from across Canada and after listening to their thoughts and experiences. Through their stories, I felt seen and heard. I related to their experiences as well as gained new perspectives. After contemplating the best way to show off these conversations and my research, I landed on creating a book that compiled bits and pieces of my interviews. This was done in an effort to commemorate their experiences and allow others to reflect, relate, and discuss their own lived experiences.

Fresh Sheet

2022 | COMD-314
A text-based cookbook design, centred on elegance and approachability. This project focussed on enhancing typesetting and publication design skills. Using complimentary typefaces and typographical elements, this design aims to create a functional, yet visually-pleasing cookbook.

	<img width="2200" height="1400" width_o="2200" height_o="1400" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/de663ba8c3cb4a23074b1044edf65b9187540c98deaf6f9649e3ce071736abdc/Magazine_Mockup_1.png" data-mid="194883823" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/de663ba8c3cb4a23074b1044edf65b9187540c98deaf6f9649e3ce071736abdc/Magazine_Mockup_1.png" />

	Concept

	This project was given with a limitation: to only use typography and typographical elements to create the design such as colour, heirarchy, grids, glyphs, etc. With that in mind, this design focusses on emphasizing the display typeface and allowing it to create the feeling of a sophisticated design along while utilizing hierarchy and grids to create a clean, approachable reading system for the recipes.

	Approach
	The “flower” motif (an asterisk) was used to symbolize plants/greenery, enhanced by the use of green and brown. This was to evoke a sense of fresh, natural ingredients and create an elegant look. In tandem with the display type, these elements give a sophisticated and refined look to the design.
<img width="1373" height="874" width_o="1373" height_o="874" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8a05644f29434bd6c5a5cdcea1753e04b34f8e0b6efb4f2ac16cdda3e1f1dcd2/cover-super-close-up.png" data-mid="197461716" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8a05644f29434bd6c5a5cdcea1753e04b34f8e0b6efb4f2ac16cdda3e1f1dcd2/cover-super-close-up.png" />

	In the chapter introductions, the beautiful display type was used to create movement through the repetition and placement of specific words.
<img width="2200" height="1500" width_o="2200" height_o="1500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/049ee5a1ca680a37c36593427aa09ca48693770feab61618cfc2b2629c853963/type-close-up-5.png" data-mid="197462531" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/049ee5a1ca680a37c36593427aa09ca48693770feab61618cfc2b2629c853963/type-close-up-5.png" />

	To contrast the busyness of the chapter introductions, the recipe spreads are kept simple with plenty of negative space, a consistent grid system, and a simple hierarchy, in an attempt to make the recipes less daunting to take on and easy for the eye to follow.&nbsp;
<img width="1489" height="1015" width_o="1489" height_o="1015" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0d1246a8aa8dc7a880b54352b2d6fe7518be38c395637446cd3ad76fc7d7c4f0/grtid-system-super-close-up.png" data-mid="197461987" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0d1246a8aa8dc7a880b54352b2d6fe7518be38c395637446cd3ad76fc7d7c4f0/grtid-system-super-close-up.png" />

Osheaga Music Festival
2021 | COMD-224&nbsp;

A rebrand of the popular music festival using its 2019 lineup. Inspired by 1960’s/1970’s fashion and design, this project focussed on creating a series of brochures and promotional posters for all three days of the festival.&nbsp;
	<img width="3000" height="2250" width_o="3000" height_o="2250" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/668a4873108f98105344ea469fa0f433908a97cd4de56431f59d2d5a2a1f9d76/saturday-cover-and-interior.png" data-mid="195721304" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/668a4873108f98105344ea469fa0f433908a97cd4de56431f59d2d5a2a1f9d76/saturday-cover-and-interior.png" />

	Concept

	This rebranding loosely references aspects of 1960’s/1970’s design, inspired by the ambience of Silk Sonic’s 2021 Grammy performance of ‘Leave the Door Open’. A rainbow-like, warm colour palette was used to mimick the fashions of the 1960’s and 70’s. Additionally, the use of abstract retro patterns, which were also common during the decades were created to add an eye-catching element and something that is reminiscent of a summer sunset. The use of Cooper Black and ITC Avant Garde Gothic is directly inspired by 1970’s album cover designs. All of this coupled together creates a feeling of this summer festival at dusk, capturing the feeling of a fleeting summer.&nbsp;

Kiki’s Delivery ServiceThe Official Screenplay
2022 | COMD-404

A re-interpretation of traditional screenplays. Using a portion of Kiki’s Delivery Service’s official screenplay, this text uses expressive and dynamic typography accompanied by small illustrations to visualize its meaning and intentions.
	<img width="3480" height="2320" width_o="3480" height_o="2320" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1adc1468c7fe53076d295ee1761ae516a10ca921eaff0c9e5fc016fef9452497/NEW-COVER.png" data-mid="196666292" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1adc1468c7fe53076d295ee1761ae516a10ca921eaff0c9e5fc016fef9452497/NEW-COVER.png" />

	Concept
	In some ways, traditional screenplays can look quite flat. It lacks elements such as emphasis, and sometimes has large blocks of descriptive text that, to a regular person, may look a bit tiring to read. To make it more approachable and digestable as simply reading material, the text was made to look like a children’s book- or more precisely, like a kid has drawn on the book. This particular concept was used to visualize and emphasize key elements of the screenplay such as the dialogue, sound effects, movements, as well as the emotions and personalities of each character.

	Approach
	My process for this design was to mimick aspects of the movie that would usually be described and expressing that through dynamic typography.

	For the most part, the format of this screenplay is relatively similar to that of traditional screenplays. Elements such as the dialogue, scene headings, and sound effects were separated to create organization between elements. To add more separation, colours and different typefaces were used and a legend was made to ensure a clear structure despite the unpredictable typography and illustration.
<img width="3804" height="2853" width_o="3804" height_o="2853" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bacfd019ed02d7cb0f6509ce6e90f8d04dc9251ee6085907d5d8c9eb31b9d85d/LEGEND-PG.png" data-mid="198091304" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bacfd019ed02d7cb0f6509ce6e90f8d04dc9251ee6085907d5d8c9eb31b9d85d/LEGEND-PG.png" />

	Words for sounds effects were emphasized by changing the weight, point size and spacing of the typeface. All the onomatopioeas used for the sound were more consistent in their look, as most of the sounds felt best represented through a taller typeface as they were sharp-sounding or made a character jump.
<img width="3942" height="2956" width_o="3942" height_o="2956" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2b1cdb6fd53412edb71c1c7bc40dd7070c0a5fcccb1b660e6a8dc535fccb636d/WEBSITE-PHOTOS-1.png" data-mid="198091489" border="0" data-scale="99" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2b1cdb6fd53412edb71c1c7bc40dd7070c0a5fcccb1b660e6a8dc535fccb636d/WEBSITE-PHOTOS-1.png" />

	To showcase more physical motions, certain actions and movements such as wind, tugging, shouting, falling was represented through either expressive type of small illustrations. This was done to create a more vivid picture for what was happening.
<img width="3942" height="2956" width_o="3942" height_o="2956" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f4d88dd30bf8a2c73983acc94beb7576d4aeb7c043984e0e5db4353d608d1d66/WEBSITE-PHOTOS-2.png" data-mid="198091922" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f4d88dd30bf8a2c73983acc94beb7576d4aeb7c043984e0e5db4353d608d1d66/WEBSITE-PHOTOS-2.png" />

	To emulate a characters, emotions, tone of voice, or loudness, parts of the dialogue were lengthened, widened, shortened or manipulated in some&nbsp; way to help others understand what that character sounded like or how they felt in that particular moment.

Pop-up Type Museum
2022 | COMD-404
An exhibit about the ancient Philippine script called ‘Baybayin’- presented through the Filipino tradition of ‘Pasalubong’ (gift-giving). Told through an imaginative scenario of what Baybayin may look like in modern times through redesigning the logos of my favourite childhood snacks.
	<img width="2048" height="1536" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b3c3bd23d838305c7ec91a505a9f056ee16091650c842da98a68d4f523645b77/DISPLAY-PIC.jpg" data-mid="198613120" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b3c3bd23d838305c7ec91a505a9f056ee16091650c842da98a68d4f523645b77/DISPLAY-PIC.jpg" />

	Concept
	Baybayin is an ancient Philippine script that died out after the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. In recent years, it has had a resurgence with people using it for artistic purposes and even creating functioning typefaces. Although it has been gaining traction, it has rarely been applied as an actual writing system. Because of this, I wanted to imagine what Baybayin may look like today by recreating the logos of some beloved Filipino snacks from my childhood. To go along with this, I also incorporated the Filipino traditon of Pasalubong, which is essentially gift-giving. Overall, this was a way to present a lesser-known aspect of Filipino culture through one that is recognized and constantly practiced to this day.

	Designing the Logos
	Since the typefaces used for these snacks would not have a Baybayin version, I created the Baybayin versions by imitating certain characteristics of the original typeface. Some factors that were taken into consideration were if it was serif or sans-serif, block or rounded letters, as well as its weight. After picking out key elements, I then went on to emulate them by first hand-drawing the Baybayin logos. Afterwards, I vectorized and cleaned them up in Adobe Illustrator.

	Creating the Prints and Packaging
	After vectorizing the logos, I began working on illustrating the snacks. I used a reference photo for each snack and illustrated them on Adobe Illustrator. As I decided to risograph print these illustrations, I took into consideration what set of colours were common throughout all the snacks, but were similar to the original packaging. Since the real packaging mostly used primary colours, I settled on using red, sunflower yellow, and aqua as my riso colours as they were within the same vein as the originals. These particular colours were also easier to blend and layer together to create other colours such as green and brown.&nbsp;

With the packaging already illustrated with the new Baybayin logos, the next step was to put them onto the real snacks. To put the new labels on the snacks, I measured each of the packages and resized the illustrations to fit within those measurements. To make it as accurate to the original designs as possible, I recoloured the illustrations to match the existing packages. Then, the new labels were printed on sticker paper and put directly on top of the existing designs on the physical bags and boxes (final product can be seen below).

	The Posters
	To add context to my exhibit, I created two posters that contain information about the history of Baybayin and what Pasalubong is.
